ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCES IN Svendborg! THREE PASSIONATE LOCALS FROM THREE DIFFERENT CULTURAL INSTITUTIONS TALK ABOUT WHAT THEY SHOW THEIR OUT-OF-TOWN GUESTS. GO HIKING The path leading through Syltemade Ådal takes you along a stream and across small wooden bridges, and it is part of the Archipelago Trail. The trail goes right by our house, so I often take my guests on a small hike – up to Egebjerg Mill, for instance, where the mill cap has been replaced by an enormous glass prism. There is a spectacular view of South Funen and the archipelago from the top of the mill. THEATRE Naturally, my guests have to experience BaggårdTeatret. Though the theatre’s shows are locally rooted, they are of national, as well as international, interest. A great example of this is the production of Bertolt Brecht’s Svendborgdigte (Svendborg Poems), written in Svendborg in 1939. The poems provide a frighteningly relevant depiction of Europe seen through the eyes of a political refugee, and this is the first ever stage production of the poems worldwide. The Danish singersongwriter Søren Huss has composed the music and also acts in the piece. This show is a must-see for my guests! JAKOB BJERREGAARD ENGMANN Theatre Manager at BaggårdTeatret CULINARY EXPERIENCES Each year, we have guests visiting for the Kulinarisk Sydfyn festival, where the entire town is one big food market. Even though my parents live in Copenhagen, where there are plenty of food markets all the time, they never want to miss Kulinarisk Sydfyn, which takes place over the last weekend in June.Talking about local products, I like to take my guests on a tour of the area’s beer and liquor producers: there are several microbreweries in and around Svendborg. My top recommendation for meats is Høkildegård. It is located right by the scenic area called Syltemade Ådal, about 10 km west of Svendborg. 36 Museums, Sights, and Entertainment
