After four years serving in the fast-paced Indonesian capital, Jakarta, for the Danish Foreign Ministry, a job at the town hall in Svendborg may seem like quite a leap. But for Trine Bargsteen and her husband, the decision to return to Denmark in the summer of 2016 was exactly the right one. INTERESTING JOB OPPORTUNITIES – When we decided to return to Denmark, choosing to settle down in Svendborg was not a foregone conclusion. Being from Northern Jutland, I didn’t have any ties here myself, but my husband’s sister had recently moved to Svendborg, and she told us how nice it was to live here – and added that there are plenty of interesting job opportunities, Trine Bargsteen says. – I ended up applying for a position, and the day of my interview was actually my first time ever in Svendborg. Then we thought to ourselves: Why not make the most of this visit? So we approached an estate agent and looked at a couple of houses now that we were here anyway. Quite quickly, we came to the conclusion that regardless of how the interview went, this was where we were going to settle down. It really was an easy decision, Trine Bargsteen recalls. – It was possible to get the type of house we were looking for, at a reasonable price. The scenic surroundings played a part, as did the city centre, which reminded me of my favourite areas of Copenhagen and Aarhus with its cafés and speciality shops, Trine Bargsteen says. EVERYTHING IS CLOSE BY Thankfully, she got the job. In July, she and her husband bought one of the houses they had seen on their first visit, and in August, she started working as a development consultant in Svendborg Municipality. Trine Bargsteen’s husband works as an IT consultant across the country, for which Svendborg is perfectly located; it’s only two hours on the motorway, whether he is going to Aarhus or Copenhagen. – In Svendborg, everything is close by, which is a huge contrast to Jakarta, where it could easily take an hour just to get across town. Sometimes, it still amazes me that there is time to go to the beach after a normal workday. It only takes a couple minutes to reach the water, even though we live in the centre of town. HIGH LEVEL OF COMPETENCY Having worked within the field of international development for several years, focusing on her own local community is an exciting new challenge for Trine Bargsteen. – I’ve got more of a hands-on approach in these projects than I have ever had before. I follow the projects from beginning to end and meet the people directly benefiting from the projects. And I think there is an extremely high level of competency in our department, she says. There are plenty of challenges at work. And on a private level, a lot is going to happen in the year ahead. Luckily, the house she and her husband fell in love with on their first day in Svendborg is large enough for a couple of extra residents. The couple is expecting twins in 2017, and Trine Bargsteen is happy that Svendborg – and not the crowded megapolis of Jakarta – will be the place they are going to push the pram around.
