ENJOYING LIFE IN SVENDBORG after 34 Years in the Capital Working as a travel journalist, Johnni Balslev has seen most of the world and all of Denmark. Up until two years ago, he lived in a flat in central Copenhagen. But then he and his wife decided to uproot themselves and spend the autumn of their lives in another part of Denmark. – We ended up choosing Svendborg, because it had that vibrant good-life atmosphere we were looking for. And what is really important, this atmosphere continues in the winter, unlike other towns around the country, that basically shut down outside the tourist season, Johnni Balslev says. MUSIC, CULTURE, AND QUALITY FOOD – When we moved here, we were amazed by the live music scene in Svendborg. There is a lot more going on than at Vesterbro in Copenhagen, where we came from. There is easily five to seven shows in a weekend, not counting the jam sessions going on around town. And it’s not just the music scene that is blooming in Svendborg. Across the cultural spectrum, people get together to promote their passions, be it music, art, sports, or quality food, Johnni Balslev says. Johnni has, among other things, involved himself in the association Kulinarisk Sydfyn, which organises the town’s large food market in the final weekend in June. – It is such a great showcase for the food being produced here on South Funen. For the smoked cheese, the fruit aquavits, the chocolate, and for the pigs that are enjoying life in the hilly countryside. There is a wealth of quality ingredients and talented food producers in the area. This also shows in the town’s wide selection of great restaurants – and we show our appreciation by eating out quite a lot, he says. CHARMING TOWNSCAPE AND SPECIALITY SHOPS Johnni Balslev was also astonished by the wide range of stores and speciality shops within quite a small distance, which has its clear advantages. – Around the town square and the pedestrian streets, there are, in my count, seven stores selling men’s clothes within a couple of hundred metres. Which is immensely practical, as you can get the shopping done in no time, he says, smiling. When Johnni has guests coming in from Copenhagen, they are impressed by the dainty speciality boutiques, the Saturday market, and the Cittaslow - the good life svb 3331 flyttilsvendborg.nu charming and well-preserved Svendborg townscape. TRIPS AROUND THE ARCHIPELAGO Johnni Balslev doesn’t hide the fact that he and his wife are enjoying life on South Funen. – We have bought ourselves a couple of ebikes, which work really well for us, as the area is quite hilly. So far, we have managed without a car, as the bus service works fine. And when we have family visiting, we use the small island ferries a lot. – Since we moved here, we have spent time with family and friends in a whole new way. They stay a couple of days, and there is plenty of things to do and see. Svendborg is a great starting point for trips to Ærø, Skarø, and Drejø. Another option is taking a roundtrip with the veteran ferry, Helge, which stops at Valdemars Castle or the beach at Christiansminde, Johnni Balslev says. He and his wife have only just begun to experience life in Svendborg, and they have a lot to look forward to. Faaborg Ærø Svendborg Thurø Tåsinge SV ENDBORG 2017 - CAPITA L OF THE ARC HIPELAGO 33
