Their dream was to find a house with a sea view, a large garden and room for a workshop, as Hanns works as a carpenter. – We checked out houses on both Langeland and Ærø without finding what we were looking for. But then we came here, on a chilly December’s day, and we stood in the living room looking out at the sea, and then we just knew this was the right place for us to settle down, Ursula says. Now they have set up two holiday homes at the property, exclusively with furniture of their own making. The workshop is open for visitors, who are more than welcome to get a close-range look at the work – that is, if they don’t mind getting their feet buried in wood shavings. – The wood is being sailed here in sawn logs, meaning that everything is made from scratch. The furniture has a unique charm, as it’s been hand-polished and treated with natural oils, Hanns says. Their signature piece is the stylish library ladder, available in oak, cherry and ash. When it’s not being used, it can be hung on the wall as a decorative sculpture. But Hanns also makes entire kitchens, bookcases, dinner tables, chairs, chopping boards and a long list of other items. – It often happens that guests who stay in our holiday homes fall in love with the furniture and want to take a similar piece back home. It’s nice to think about them getting a lasting memory of their vacation, Ursula says. She clearly enjoys opening up her home for the holiday guests, who often join her in the garden and the greenhouse – and even on a trip in the family’s sailboat. – Some of our regular families have been here eight years straight. Most of our visitors are from the large cities, and some of them stay here for two to three weeks to get recharged for the year ahead. It is a nice place for kids, as there is only a short walk to the beach, and several of our younger guests have learnt how to ride their bikes here, since there is hardly any cars on the island, she says. Directly on the beach is a sauna cabin – made by Hanns, naturally – and the place is quickly becoming popular with winter swimmers, who enjoy the sauna’s warmth followed by a quick dip in the cold sea.
